Spring Quarterly in Moab - It's a Wrap
Wow, what an active Spring
Quarterly! I hope everyone enjoyed the opportunity to go on location with
several/many Native American models as they were fantastic. And I don't think
anyone realized how good it was going to be. I still think the most
entertaining part was watching all the cameras generally pointed in the same
direction (at the models) and seeing everyone engage, interact and have so
many smiles. Ü
Thank You
So many thanks to Bruce Jolley
and Jerry Hansen for putting the event together. And special thanks to
Jerry for keeping us organized and obtaining the snack foods and the
really good pizza for lunch! He was pretty entertaining too with his well
placed lenses and his son who stole the show a few times as he sported a
camera as big as he was.
Most of all I thought it was
awesome to see how everyone interacted, mingled and had fun at the two
shoots – the friendships and camaraderie was unmistakable – especially
when we're all making fun of each other and I know the models sure got of
kick out of it as it made them smile and laugh as well. I think Dave just
thought we were crazy. And can you say "stopping traffic"? Photographing
on location was a show stopper for sure – seemed similar to being in
Yellowstone when a photographer has stopped (let alone 35+ of
them) everyone thinks there's a Moose or a Bear!!! Unless of course you
work for BLM, and then he stops to ask for a permit! Luckily, it was
"instructional", whew!
Another magical time was when
we were extremely lucky to photograph the models on the private property
of a gentleman whom I still don't know his name that was so generous to
allow a semi-wild pack of photographers converge onto his property. I know
he enjoyed being able to share his treasures and was appreciative of the
professionalism and respect from everyone. He told me he gave his contact
information to someone so if that someone is you, please let us know.
Image Collection
We would like to create a
slideshow and post some images on the IPPA website. If each of you could
be so kind to please choose at least 5 of your images for this purpose it
would be greatly appreciated. Please send them (reply to this email) by
Friday the 18th Ü. Additionally, I'm sure you'd like to know the models
names so here they are: Carmon Hunter ( the grandma) Josei Louise (little
child), Misty Nonay, Ben Yazzie, Britney Yazzie, Alizza, Laura Le, Laura
Ge Jo, Marvina Pete.
If you have an questions or comments for Dave, you
can email him at davis@dhdavis.com.
If you prefer to send any images directly to Dave, send them to davis@achol.net
I asked Dave about model
releases and as long as there is no commercial use, release is granted as
he has the signed releases. If you need a copy email Dave at
davis@dhdavis.com or through
his website at

Competition
At the beginning and before we left the MARC to photograph, Jerrie Hansen
(Print Competition Chair) reminded everyone that images from the
class/workshop are not eligible for IPPA competition. Many conversations
were pursued about this subject and the end result is still the same as
this is the PPA/IPPA rule. If you do choose to submit a print for
competition, keep in mind that the judges have very trained eyes for
duplicate faces and places so it's simply not worth the risk of getting a
print disqualified, esp. since Dennis, the jury chairman, was also at the
workshop.
Moab Photo Symposium
As a side note, I received a
few questions about the Moab Photo Symposium that a few of us had attended
prior to the IPPA event. The Moab Photo Symposium is in it's fourth year
and I have attended two of them. It has not only been a fun experience,
but a great excuse to get away and enjoy what the Moab area has to offer.
More information is located at
http://www.moabphotosym.com if
you're interested in this event for next year. I'll warn you that the
lodging and workshops fill pretty fast.
